University of Sydney

Description of the project

Hibbs & Associates Pty Ltd is a member of the University of Sydney Campus Infrastructure Supplier Panel, and has conducted numerous WHS activities on behalf of the University. This includes but is not limited to desktop & site audits of their Principal Contractors, identification of University of Sydney Officers, risk assessments and in this example high risk audits.

The University of Sydney has approximately 60 sites that have been assessed by the University of Sydney Safety Health and Wellbeing | Human Resources Department as conducting high risk activities. These are activities determined by the University of Sydney to be of a high risk nature and should not be confused with high risk activities as defined in the WHS Regulations 2011.

The University of Sydney Safety Health and Wellbeing | Human Resources Department engaged Hibbs & Associates Pty Ltd to conduct high risk audits on 15 of these sites. The objective was to verify that the systems in place to control the identified hazards were appropriate/adequate and that they had been implemented and actioned. Amongst the sites that Hibbs & Associates Pty Ltd audited were the following workplace types:

  • Chemical laboratories
  • Biological laboratories
  • Workshops
  • Microscopy laboratories
  • Pharmacies

Details of innovations on these projects

This was a safety audit using existing UoS templates. Reporting was also standardised providing little input from the auditor, apart from the findings of yes and no. Hence the opportunity to demonstrate innovation in this project was mitigated to a large extent by the client’s in-house protocols and safety systems.

Activities that provided value added options to the client, detailing any long term benefits

  • Detection of potential non-conformances for the WHS sites to ensure the health and safety of the students, teachers and visitors attending these workplaces.
  • Ongoing support & communication long after the audits were completed. This was provided as a value added service to resolve stakeholder issues at no additional cost.
  • Provided recommendations and advice to UoS personnel interviewed at the various workplaces to improve their knowledge of the WHS legislative requirements.
